If it's a symbol, to hell with it.


“I was once, five or six years ago, taken by some friends to have dinner with Mary McCarthy and her husband, Mr. Broadwater… She departed the Church at the age of 15 and is a Big Intellectual…. Toward morning the conversation turned on the Eucharist, which I, being the Catholic, was obviously supposed to defend. Mrs. Broadwater said when she was a child and received the host, she thought of it as the Holy Ghost, He being the most portable person of the Trinity; now she thought of it as a symbol and implied that it was a pretty good one. I then said, in a very shaky voice, Well, if it’s a symbol, to hell with it. That was all the defense I was capable of but I realize now that this is all I will ever be able to say about it, outside of a story, except that it is the center of existence for me; all the rest of life is expendable.” - Flannery O'Connor

What a joy to read such a statement of faith. And isn't this the statement of faith said when one partakes in the Eucharist?
'The Body of Christ.'
'Amen.'

And the Eucharist and the the Resurrection are tied to together.
The real presence of the Eucharist is the parallel claim of the historical resurrection, which is of particular importance during the Lenten season. Both are declaration that God is not silent. That God works with and within the world. It proclaims that God's action are mediated through immediacy.

However, we are incredulous toward the Real. Instead we allow our post-modern sensibility to transfix us in the infinite regression of meaning through symbol and myth. And if this is true, Joseph Campbell is the false savior of our time. He offers a translation of meaning and existence through 'universal' symbols, but which can never answer the metaphysical. Such a project can only defer meaning, which is exactly what philosophers like Derrida would like us have to believe.

What is more troubling are those happy fools in theology who still wittingly align themselves with Tillichian and Bultmannian philosophy. No two theologians have done more theological damage in recent decades, as they have persuaded many that the Eucharist, the Virgin Birth, the miracles, the Resurrection are nothing more than mere symbols. Fantastic, helpful, 'meaningful' symbols, but symbols nonetheless. They are merely powerful earthly representation that help translate the world, but they don't represent the Real. They defer meaning. They merely translate. Tillich and Bultmann were crass logical positivists dressed in theologian garb.

A few months ago a few friends and I were discussing Borg. We decided that Borg’s resurrection was metaphorical. That deeply troubled a friend of mine. Days later he returned to me, and said Jason, you know why a metaphorical resurrection bothers me? He answered his own question, “Because I am not going to metaphorically die! I am going to actually, factually die! And I want a savior who actually saved me from sin and death!” Bultmann seems to be offering something similar, but instead of a metaphor, it’s a myth.

So, if it's only metaphor, if it's only myth, or if it's only symbol then to hell with it. To hell with a religion that is merely 'trying its best' to translate the world. To hell with a religion that can be construed into a spiritual 'preference'.

But, if it is the Eucharist that translates the meaning of the world, and not the world that dictates the meaning of the Eucharist, then perhaps the only word appropriate is 'amen'.

I think you make a good point for why religious people need the resurrection, the Eucharist, etc to be Real and not merely a symbol. Because if they are symbols, they don't carry the same profound meaning that people look for in them. All the same, these still seem like delusional beliefs. Previous cultures believed their stories or myths as real. The Norse viewed Thor and Odin as controllers of the heavens, and for the Greeks, it was Zeus and company. What is so different about the Christians' belief in this case for another fictitious or delusional figurehead to an essentially empty universe? Humans make their own meaning and it is perhaps there that Christian stories still matter (http://mysticatheist.blogspot.com/2009/02/word-of-science-story-still-to-tell.html), but in a narrative sense, not a metaphysical or Real sense as you put it.

Yes, I agree with the question of relevence vis a vis other religions making claims of trancendent/metaphyiscal reality. That would take a little more time, but then again, I certainly resonate with the agnosticism that your comment illicits (half the blog does claim atheism). That said, the point I am more concerned with - the current disease in religious studies programs - are those that are trying to be theologians while really acting as cultural anthropologists. And as my post says, too often they have allowed the Enlightenment to dictate the discussion - where anthropology answers christology, rather than the other way around. Or in the last post; the Eucharist that gains its symbolism from humaity and not the other way around.

I find this blog interesting because the title itself encapsulates my position. Raised Catholic, I too came to eventually realize real sociological and political role of the Church, as well as to discover the "practical" foundations of Christianity in general (e.g., Chrisitianity is merely ancient Egyptian mythology with a new face and names).

But, I also recognize the on the local level, churches do contribute good work (if for a false motivation). I like the Spanish philosopher Miguel de Unamuno's position: "I believe in the Church, but not in God."

A little off topic but your post inspired me:

I've never been of faith but I've always thought of God as an imaginary number (the ones that engineers and mathematicians study). An imaginary number is basically the square root of a negative number which, after all my years of math, I still don't understand. But, some people do. Some people live in imaginary numbers, creating complex systems based on them, theorizing proofs and conjectures that assume their existence.

As an economist I only study what is real, or rather what is tangible (kinda). We don't study imaginary numbers but we do study "the invisible hand" which is just saying that there exists an unseen mechanism that allows markets to be self-regulating. So what sounds more crazy, telling someone you believe in a supreme being or that you believe in this detached hand that goes around telling us what price we should buy something at. I would say the latter sounds a great deal crazier.

Mathematicians get to represent their imaginary numbers with a small i, us economists get to represent our detached hand with arrows on a demand and supply diagram (kinda lame) and Catholics get to represent Christ with something to eat and drink. Not a shabby deal on the Catholic side.

Basically what I'm saying is that though iconoclasm is banned from most religions, it is human nature to represent what we cannot see; whether it's in math, economics, or religion.

Hmm, I don't quite know how or why I ended up here, but I love that quote of Flannery's. I'm a Catholic convert who's quite satisfied with mystery. I don't want a God I can understand or figure out or that makes me in control- Yipes! Interesting thoughts and comments. I went to a screening of The 13th Day last night. I'm hoping it will be seen by many people who seem to forget that God will not be mocked and that there is a hell and we need to live with "eternity" ever in our minds (St. Alphonsus Ligouri doesn't mince words) and before us at all times, for 'we know not the hour' we'll have to meet our Judge to give an account of our lives. I'm glad that the Kingdom has been granted to children and those with 'childlike' trust. Too much knowledge "puffeth up" -- so I'm pretty safe! :) God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. I'm a simple woman who's simply in love with Jesus and His Church. God bless you on your journey.

That just says it all for me. With out the Eucharist Christianity just becomes an empty box, another nice religion, and Jesus another Buddha. I once told that to some evangelical trying to get brownie points for 'converting' another Catholic, I said 'if you can really convince me that the Holy Eucharist (as consecrated by a valid priest)is JUST a symbol, and it isn't REALLY Jesus, body,blood, soul and divinity then you would basically be convincing me that Christianity is a lie.'

I know I scared him.

I'm not a Roman Catholic, and I don't know what I believe about transsubstantiation, but I am certain that Jesus Christ is literally present in the eucharist in a unique way--which is very different from the tradition I was raised in which definitely sees communion as a symbol only. I wrote about it recently, and how it has finally made Christianity fall into place for me, at a blog where I am a contributor.
